Swiss SMS vote works "without problem"
Swiss town of Bulach successfully conducts vote by SMS. 11% of the electorate used SMS. Some people had trouble understanding the ID requirements (code sent by mail) - but no other problems with the system reported.

Using SMS to vote for TV entertainment shows is a good idea but the same does not apply when your vote matters. Just because you can vote electronically does not mean that you should do it. There are many issues that are raised - a few discussed here: UK e-voting pilots deeply flawed

good point and thanks for the link. on my list of things-to-blog-next i have ID requirements & security issues. clearly there are a lot of issues surrounding ID & 'hack proof' voting - in both electronic and paper formats.
i thought it was pretty astounding that this SMS vote - and the prior trials in the UK - were permitted by the local authorities- given the dozens of unknowns and multiple avenues for hacking, double voting, etc.
i was wondering if this swiss town chose this relatively innoculous issue (speeding limits) b/c they weren't sure how well the SMS voting was going to go - or if they discussed these issues and had some kind of vote verification plan before hand. we should try to get in touch with them to ask these questions.
